Da una felice collaborazione tra il giornalista Andrea Raimondo e lo Staff di VeniceQueen.it è nato, sul numero 198 di Aprile 2008 del mensile di collezionismo e cultura musicale RARO!, un servizio dedicato alla discografia della funk-rock band californiana.
Nel reportage viene stilato un dettagliatissimo resoconto su tutti gli album dei Red Hot Chili Peppers dal 1984 al 1999, dagli inizi con l'omonimo debutto, passando per capolavori crossover come Blood Sugar Sex Magik, fino alla consacrazione mondiale del pluripremiato Californication, tra ristampe, versioni per mercati esteri e rarità.
Un numero da collezione per tutti gli appassionati ed un'occasione speciale per vedere l'operato del nostro portale, esplicitamente ringraziato per la collaborazione a fine reportage.

Mi chiamo Andrea Raimondo e sono un collaboratore della rivista “Raro!”, mensile di collezionismo e cultura musicale. La nostra rivista ormai da più di vent’anni è un punto di riferimento costante per tutti coloro che fanno del
collezionismo musicale una passione, ma anche per coloro che sono alla ricerca di una critica musicale che rivolga l’attenzione più nei confronti del dato artistico, musicale in senso stretto, piuttosto che di quello mainstream, dell’industria, delle tendenze di una stagione.
Tutto sommato è certamente un approccio antico, di gusto vintage, non c’è dubbio, che forse stride in un era dove nel campo di arti come il cinema e la musica si impone sempre più il dato formale più che quello qualitativo, a sfavore di quelle che, si presume, dovrebbero rimanere espressioni artistiche. Nel campo musicale poi, parlare oggi di dischi, di vinili, di rarità, sembra quasi una bestemmia. Ormai l’album in quanto tale ha perso totalmente di importanza, in favore di una musica pret-à-porter, usa e getta, di consumo.
Nonostante oggi troppo spesso i dischi si riducano ad una sorta di collezione di singoli, senza alcun progetto dietro, senza il dato artistico che rende unica e immortale un’opera, siamo ancora convinti che la musica debba essere trattata non come materia di consumo ma come quella materia di cui sono fatti i sogni, quegli stessi sogni che per anni gli album hanno incarnato e alimentato a loro volta. Nelle canzoni, nelle immagini scolpite in copertine indimenticabili, spesso diventate istantanee immortali di un’epoca, di un modo di essere o di vedere e considerare la realtà che passa di fronte ai nostri occhi, troviamo una passione che riteniamo debba essere recuperata dagli artisti e da tutti gli addetti ai lavori.
Con questa stessa passione e secondo le priorità che sono alla base del nostro mensile, abbiamo deciso di trattare nel numero di aprile la discografia dei Red Hot Chili Peppers, che fino ad ora non avevamo mai proposto. Un gruppo i Red Hot che in verità, a nostro parere, ha recentemente virato pericolosamente verso l’approccio mainstream a cui facevo riferimento, ma che in passato ha certamente segnato una delle stagioni più innovative, creative e gloriose del rock statunitense. Nel mio articolo ho cercato di sottolineare il valore aggiunto dei Peppers, la loro importanza storica e culturale, nonché la capacità di realizzare album epocali e indimenticabili.
Nel ricostruire i passaggi di questa straordinaria e personalissima parabola artistica il vostro sito (davvero ben fatto, complimenti), nella persona di Fabio Cusano, è stato utilissimo nell’aiutarmi a rintracciare rarità, edizioni speciali e quant’altro fa parte di una discografia lunga e densa come quella dei Red Hot, per la quale ci siamo riservati la scelta di dividerla in due parti, trattando per ora solo gli album editi negli anni ’80 e ’90 (anni duemila, raccolte e singoli usciranno in una seconda parte, presumibilmente il prossimo anno).

Arik Marshall "The Trax of My Years" is actually a complilation of songs from my various previous albums...kind of a 'best of so far' type thang
VQ.IT Can you describe your work in a few words?
A.M. Describe my work in a few words? hmmm...exotic, erotic, hypnotic, symphonic, psychotic, trance, dance, romance music.
VQ.IT Something about the collaboration in this project: When did You Meet H.R. And the Fishbone's Crew ?
A.M. I met the bruthas in Fishbone in like '86 or '87...my little big brother Lonnie had met Norwood (Fishbone bassist) and we proceeded to get to know the whole 'bone crew from goin' to their shows and seein' 'em at local clubs and such.
H.R. man...that was a trip...when I was writing and recording my first album ('Memories of Amnesia') in like '94 my girlfriend at the time took me to the Whisky a-go go club in Hollywood to see the Bad Brains...I was so inspired by the show that I wrote three songs the next day ('True to the Almighty''Black Jewpiter' and 'In the Silence of Your Love') then the VERY next day I was on my way to the studio to record them and who's walkin' right across the street from me? H.R hisself! I went over and asked him would he come down to the studio and sing on these songs that he and his band inspired and he said he'd come down the next day.
I was thinkin' 'yeah right' cuzz he had a reputation for being...lets just say 'eccentric'...anyway...the next day he indeed did show up! What a blessing!
VQ.IT And Flea&Chad Smith? How and when was the song born?
A.M. Flea & Chad played on two cuts...one was the Bad Brains inspired 'In the Silence of Your Love' and the other is called 'Stranger In a Strange Band'...that one is just about feeling weird and misunderstood but at least you've got music and those who play it with you to connect you with somethin' real and fun and beautiful.
VQ.IT When did you start to make music and why?
A.M. Ever since I can remember I've always LOVED music (I think the first chord I learned how to play was the umbilical chord while I was a fetus groovin' to my momma's heartbeat)...I wrote my first song when I was seven...
it was called 'Futuristic Funk'...but it was my big bro Lonnie who actually got an acoustic guitar (he eventually
switched to bass) which made me realize that not only could I listen to music but I could actually play and create it as well.
VQ.IT What about your Guitar Gear? Live and in studio? (amps, pedals and other things)
A.M. For better or worse I've never really been into gear and stuff like that...just simple shit ya know...a '68 Fender Twin Reverb amp, a funky but smooth Strat or Les Paul, a Boss Overdrive/Distortion, Line 6 delay, Crybaby Wah, and a Small Stone phase shifter. Every now and again I'll go into a music store and check out different effects pedals...
if I hear I sound that appeals to me I'll try to get it.
VQ.IT Did you collaborate in any other albums from 2000 onwards? (In Internet there isn't a good Marshall's biography)
A.M. Yes...I recorded and wrote with Macy Gray, I recorded with one of my favorite groups Moloko while on tour with Macy in London (it's a cut called 'Cannot Contain This' on their 'Statues' album), I did some stuff with The Prodigy
while also in London (don't know if it's been released or not), I worked on a re-mix for Bjork...numerous little sessions hear and there as well ya know.
VQ.IT Is “Marshall Law”'s project still alive?
A.M. Well...as long as me and my bro are alive and swangin' there's always the chance of another x-cuse to get loose on the Marshall Law tip.
VQ.IT What do You Think of Weapon of Choice?
A.M. Trulio USED to be dope....Weapon of Choice still iz!
VQ.IT Who is your main source of inspiration now?
A.M. I'd say Muhammad Ali (always & forever...even in a Heatwave), Crazy Horse, Benny Hill and Bob Marley.
And Nature. And my best friend Tracy Wannomae. (an amazing saxophonist who used to play with Macy and Ricki
Lee Jones)
VQ.IT What kind of cover (from any bands) would you like to play and why? 
A.M. Um...I'd like to cover 'Goin' In Circles' (I think that's what's it's called) by The Friends of Distinction...cuzz it's such a powerfully beautiful and moody song.
VQ.IT Are you going to play any gigs in Europe next year ?
A.M. I wish! Hopefully I'll be back over the pond in the not-so-distant future...preferrably playing my OWN music for a change!
VQ.IT On his “Scar Tissue” autobiography, Anthony Kiedis states that your dismissal from the Chili Peppers was due to the lack of development of musical ideas on your part, despite your live performances were very good.
Got anything to say about that ?
A.M. That was kind of accurate...where I was coming from musically wasn't really clickin' with him in terms of being inspired to write lyrics...but there were other factors involved as well but...whatever, ya know...it was fun(k) while it (b)lasted!
VQ.IT Is there anything you you wanna say to the Italian fans and Venicequeen.it readers?
A.M. Yeah...I'd like to say I LOVE your country and your people (especially your much bella women!) and to continue the fight against the Placebo Syndrome with the TRUTH & SOUL powers of The Funkentelechy...Deaf To The Sonic Mirage! Accept no substitutes...if it aint real it's ill!
