Torna a far parlare di sè il chitarrista Arik Marshall. Il chitarrista che
per un anno (tra la metà '92 e quella del '93) fu parte integrante dei Red
Hot Chili Peppers, dopo più di un decennio di collaborazioni sparse e la
fondazione dei "Marshall Law" con il fratello
Lonnie ( dei Weapon Of Choice
), oggi dovrebbe sfornare una release che riguarda anche delle stelle del
crossover californiano, tra cui anche Chad Smith e Flea.

INTRODUZIONE
Arik
dal grande pubblico è un po' evaso, o magari non ha avuto troppa fortuna ad
afferrare il pulman delle band crossover nel periodo giusto, chi può dirlo.
Dai bootlegs a noi è rimasto un buon ricordo, del chitarrista che per un
anno circa, ha traghettato la band in un periodo di transizione, nel fine
tour 92 post Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Ne va orgoglioso di quel periodo, la
scritta campeggia anche sul suo Myspace, anche se probabilmente, se non
fosse per i suoi trascorsi, non sarebbe stato tra i primi che avrei aggiunto
sulla mia pagina account appena iscritto. La cosa più paradossale è che, tra
informazioni sulla città degli angeli e background di musicisti e band varie
del posto, non avevo mai scambiato due parole sulla sua carriera e sui suoi
trascorsi crossover. Giorni fa che mi linkò la news del suo disco, mi parve
buona idea scambiarci due chiacchiere, e lui ne è stato ben lieto. Facendo
chiarezza su alcuni punti ancora non proprio trasparenti e parlando del suo
libro, contenente poesie e racconti vari.

"The
Trax of My Years" is actually a complilation of songs from my various
previous albums...kind of a 'best of so far' type thang

few words?

Describe my work in a few words?
hmmm...exotic, erotic, hypnotic, symphonic, psychotic, trance, dance,
romance music.

Something about the
collaboration in this project: When did You Meet H.R. And the Fishbone's
Crew ?
A.M.
I met the bruthas in Fishbone in
like '86 or '87...my little big brother Lonnie had met Norwood (Fishbone
bassist) and we proceeded to get to know the whole 'bone crew from goin' to
their shows and seein' 'em at local clubs and such.
H.R. man...that was a trip...when I was writing and recording my first album
('Memories of Amnesia') in like '94 my girlfriend at the time took me to the
Whisky a-go go club in Hollywood to see the Bad Brains...I was so inspired
by the show that I wrote three songs the next day ('True to the
Almighty''Black Jewpiter' and 'In the Silence of Your Love') then the VERY
next day I was on my way to the studio to record them and who's walkin'
right across the street from me? H.R hisself! I went over and asked him
would he come down to the studio and sing on these songs that he and his
band inspired and he said he'd come down the next day.
I was thinkin' 'yeah
right' cuzz he had a reputation for being...lets just say
'eccentric'...anyway...the next day he indeed did show up! What a blessing!

And Flea&Chad Smith? How and
when was the song born?
A.M.
Flea & Chad played on two
cuts...one was the Bad Brains inspired 'In the Silence of Your Love' and the
other is called 'Stranger In a Strange Band'...that one is just about
feeling weird and misunderstood but at least you've got music and those who
play it with you to connect you with somethin' real and fun and beautiful.

When did you start to make music
and why?
A.M.
Ever since I can remember I've
always LOVED music (I think the first chord I learned how to play was the
umbilical chord while I was a fetus groovin' to my momma's heartbeat)...I
wrote my first song when I was seven...
it was called 'Futuristic Funk'...but
it was my big bro Lonnie who actually got an acoustic guitar (he eventually
switched to bass) which made me realize that not only could I listen to
music but I could actually play and create it as well.

What about your Guitar Gear?
Live and in studio? (amps, pedals and other things)
A.M.
For better or worse I've never
really been into gear and stuff like that...just simple shit ya know...a '68
Fender Twin Reverb amp, a funky but smooth Strat or Les Paul, a Boss
Overdrive/Distortion, Line 6 delay, Crybaby Wah, and a Small Stone phase
shifter. Every now and again I'll go into a music store and check out
different effects pedals...
if I hear I sound that appeals to me I'll try to
get it.

Did you collaborate in any other
albums from 2000 onwards? (In Internet there isn't a good Marshall's
biography)
A.M.
Yes...I recorded and wrote with
Macy Gray, I recorded with one of my favorite groups Moloko while on tour
with Macy in London (it's a cut called 'Cannot Contain This' on their
'Statues' album), I did some stuff with The Prodigy
while also in London
(don't know if it's been released or not), I worked on a re-mix for
Bjork...numerous little sessions hear and there as well ya know.

still alive?
A.M.
Well...as long as me and my bro
are alive and swangin' there's always the chance of another x-cuse to get
loose on the Marshall Law tip.

Choice?
A.M.

Who is your main source of
inspiration now?
A.M.
I'd say Muhammad Ali (always &
forever...even in a Heatwave), Crazy Horse, Benny Hill and Bob Marley.
And Nature. And my best friend Tracy Wannomae. (an amazing saxophonist who
used to play with Macy and Ricki
Lee Jones)

What kind of cover (from any
bands) would you like to play and why?
A.M.
Um...I'd like to cover 'Goin' In
Circles' (I think that's what's it's called) by The Friends of
Distinction...cuzz it's such a powerfully beautiful and moody song.

Are you going to play any gigs
in Europe next year ?
A.M.
I wish! Hopefully I'll be back
over the pond in the not-so-distant future...preferrably playing my OWN
music for a change!

On his “Scar Tissue”
autobiography, Anthony Kiedis states that your dismissal from the Chili
Peppers was due to the lack of development of musical ideas on your part,
despite your live performances were very good.
Got anything to say about that ?
A.M.
That was kind of
accurate...where I was coming from musically wasn't really clickin' with him
in terms of being inspired to write lyrics...but there were other factors
involved as well but...whatever, ya know...it was fun(k) while it (b)lasted!

Yeah...I'd like to say I LOVE

Ho conosciuto i ragazzi dei Fishbone nell’ 86-87….. mio fratello Lonnie
conosceva
Norwood (bassista dei Fishbone) e alla fine li abbiamo conosciuti tutti,
continuando
ad andare ai loro concerti, nei club etc etc
H.R…. che storia ! Mentre scrivevo e registravo il mio primo album
(“Memories of Amnesia”)
nel 94, la mia ragazza di allora mi portò a vedere i Bad Brains al
Whisky-a-go-go di Hollywood..
Il concerto mi ispirò tanto da portarmi a scrivere ben 3 brani il giorno
successivo ('True to the Almighty''Black Jewpiter' e 'In the Silence of Your
Love') . Il giorno dopo ancora stavo andando
in studio a registrare e chi incontro sulla mia strada ? H.R. in persona !
L’ho fermato e gli ho
chiesto se voleva cantare i pezzi che lui e la sua band mi avevano ispirato
e mi ha promesso
che lo avrebbe fatto il giorno dopo …. Mi sono detto “si, vabbè …”, perché
aveva la reputazione
di essere un tipo strano e invece …. il giorno dopo si presentò in studio !

Flea e Chad hanno suonato in due pezzi …. Uno è “In the Silence of Your
Love” ispirato dai Bad Brains e l’altro è “Stranger in a Strange Band” ….
Quest’ultimo parla di quando ti senti strano e frainteso
ma per lo meno c’è la musica e ci sono le persone che suonano con te per
connetterti a qualcosa di
reale, diventente e bello.

Quando hai iniziato a fare musica ?

Per quanto mi ricordi ho sempre AMATO la musica (credo che la prima corda
che ho suonato
sia stato il cordone ombelicale quando ero ancora nella pancia della mamma
[qui Arik fa un gioco
di parole intraducibile : “chord” in Inglese significa sia “corda” che
“accordo” e si pronuncia
esattamente come “cord” cioè “cordone ombelicale”ndt])
Ho scritto la mia prima canzone a 7 anni, si intitolava “Futuristic Funk”.
…. È stato mio fratello Lonnie,
che aveva una chitarra acustica ( dopo è passato al basso), a farmi capire
che non solo potevo ascoltare la musica,
potevo anche suonarla e scriverla.

Nel bene e nel male non mi sono mai occupato molto dell’equipaggiamento e
cose simili …. Le solite
storie …. Un ampli Fender Twin Reverb del 68 , Strat o Les Paul funky ma
regolare, un Boss Overdrive/Distortion, Line 6 Delay, Crybaby Wag e uno
Small Tone phase shifter . Ogni tanto faccio
un salto in un negozio di musica e provo diversi pedali …. Se trovo qualcosa
che mi piace me lo prendo.

Sì, ho scritto e registrato con Macy Gracy. Mentre ero in tour con Macy a
Londra ho registrato
con i Moloko, una delle mie band preferite (un pezzo che si intitola “Cannot
Contain This” dall’
album “Statues”). Sempre a Londra ho fatto qualcosa con i Prodigy (ma non se
lo abbiamo
pubblicato in realtà), ho fatto un re-mix per Bjork …. Insomma parecchie
sessioni qui e là …

vivi?

Finchè io e mio fratello gireremo questo mondo, ci sarà sempre
possibilità che ci sia un seguito al primo disco.

I primi ERANO la mia droga i secondi lo sono ancora ( Arik ha suonato con

Chi o cosa è la tua attuale fonte d'ispirazione ? Parlo sia di musica che
per quanto riguarda lo stile di vita...

Direi Muhammad Ali (per sempre nel profondo del mio animo), Crazy Horse,
Benny Hill e Bob Marley. E la Natura. E il mio migliore amico Tracy
Wannomae. (un grandissimo Sassofonista che suonava con Macy e Ricki Lee
Jones)

Che genere di cover ti piacerebbe interpretare e perchè?

Mi piacerebbe suonare “'Goin' In Circles'” (mi pare si chiami così ) dei
The Friends of Distinction...perchè ha un piglio groovoso ed energico.

Lo spero! Fortunatamente dovrei tornare in un futuro non troppo lontano

Nell'autobiografia “Scar Tissue“,
Anthony Kiedis parla del tuo breve periodo nei Peppers
e successiva dipartita perchè, nonostante fossi discretamente bravo nei
live, la tua voglia compositiva tendeva a scarseggiare. Qual è il tuo punto
di vista a riguardo?
A.M.
Si, è abbastanza vero …. Il mio modo di fare musica non si adattava
al
suo modo di scrivere
i testi …. Ci sono anche altri fattori però …. Comunque, dai, è stato
divertente finchè è durato
(gioco di parole … aggiungendo una F ed una B in inglese diventa “è stato
funk fino che è esploso”, ndt)

Sì...mi piacerebbe dir loro che AMO la vostra terra e la gente del
posto (specialmente le vostre “ bella”-lo scrive proprio così- Donne!) e di
continuare a combattere contro la Placebo Syndrome

potere della forza e dell'animo (TRUTH & SOUL, cita il disco dei Fishbone)
